Halloween Tree

So excited that Halloween is only weeks away!!

I'm also excited I don't have to spend it cooped up in a hotel at a conference like I originally thought. That's no way to celebrate the Sabbath in my opinion.

Tradition in my family is we start decorating for Halloween around the first of October (my mother's birthday)...this year, truth be told, we started a little early.

31 days is just not enough time to celebrate one the best holidays of the year!!

Today was a huge success in the "holiday shopping" adventures. My mother was browsing through the Sunday newspaper and came to a Big Lots! ad (it's a large discount store for those that don't have them in your city) and they were advertising a FIVE FOOT LIGHT UP HALLOWEEN TREE!!!

Now my mother has been wanting something exactly this for a while. Black branches to hang Halloween like decorations and "ornaments" from. So when she saw this, and with her birthday being tomorrow, we jumped in the car and I bought my mother her Halloween Tree.

We put it on top of the ottoman and decorated it with black bats, witches boots, eye balls and spiderwebs. It looks SPOOKTACULAR!! (I've included pictures below).

The witch is a painted walnut my mother has had for years.
Eyeballs and witch's boots
And a black crow for a tree topper!!

Happy October everyone!

31 Days of Fright!

Out of My Head

You ever just get a song in your head and you can't get it out. There have been two just going over and over and over again lately. Can't get them out. Luckily they're fun and upbeat songs. So I figured I'd get them stuck in your head too.

Filthy Pussy Soap

Okay now everyone get your minds out of the gutter....

We're talking Pussy Cats here.

Earlier in the week my mother received a care package from her friend in Hawaii and one of the items was Filthy Pussy Soap from the Filthy Farm Girl soap company. The soap she was sent smells just delicious (my sister wanted to eat it). Last night we went on their website and they have so many amazing soaps (all animal product and cruelty free).

Some of their products include Filthy Bridesmaid, Filthy Farm Girl, Filthy Vampire...so many choices. I think everyone is getting soap in their Christmas stocking this year.

Today I was Boo'd

Not in the heckler kind of way but in the spooktacular Halloween kind of way!!

Because she knows how much I love Halloween The Thriftiness Miss sent this to me today "Instead of getting a treat bag on your front porch, you get a fun button in your inbox. To show everyone that you've been booed...The button links back to Sweet Boutique AND the person who booed you as well (so others can find out what the game is all about)."

And after all, if you don't already know how much I love Halloween you will soon learn with the start of October and blog hop and link up 31 Day Fright Fest I'm co-hosting. Hope to see you then.

Halloween Decorations

We're only 45 days from Halloween; and while we haven't started decorating the WHOLE house we have purchased a few new decorations.

The skulls are salt/pepper shakers and then a candle lantern.

Weekend: Unplanned Changes

On Thursday afternoon my weekend plans, to NYC and seeing my Mr. New Jersey, were abruptly cancelled postponed. Sadly, Jersey had a sudden family emergency that required him to take a last minute flight home to be with his family. So while we didn't get to meet this weekend we will rescheduling to see one another soon.

While I didn't get to be with my Jersey boy this weekend, I did spend some time with the family (no where near the same I agree) and went to dinner celebrating my cousin's husband's birthday - Joe's Crab Shack right off the Columbia River.

Since I don't have pictures of the Big Apple to share with you today I thought I'd at least share the pictures I took at sunset.

My First Dansko Shoes

I'm posting this on the bus, on the way home from work, after a grueling six hour (day one) new student orientation at work.... work with me and through any typos. Haha

Dansko shoes are a highly (recommended and) supportive shoe. Many nurses, waitresses and other on-your-feet professionals wear them. My sister, aunt and mother have all recently purchased pairs and today my first pair arrived.

Where I leave for Jersey in a few days and will be walking around NYC for hours I wanted to make sure to have good shoes. So I sucked it up and forked over the money. Now to just break them in before Saturday.
They're here! They're here!
Ooooo......
The toe buckle is even adjustable. Mega brownie points!
Aren't they cute??

Guest Blogger: Ech from Ech & Will

Since my work-life is so topsy-turvy right now with 100+ new students arriving and three days of hell fun-filled orientation lay ahead of me I figured this would be the best time to have a Guest Blogger!! Ech and I have been following one another's blogs for some time now and I couldn't think of a better person to highlight today than her.

1. Your name, name of blog and when you first started the blogging:
I'm Ech, I blog over at Ech & Will. I've always been a blogger, but for this blog's purpose I've been writing since September 2010. Why that date? It was a week before our wedding and a huge transition time for us. Up until then, we were in a long distance relationship and neither of us had ever lived with a significant other so it was a huge step up in the grown up world.

2. How/why did you first start blogging? In high school I "blogged" on Xanga (aka answered those silly surveys and posted my favorite songs). In college I "blogged" on LiveJournal and Blogger (aka I mistyped my weekend adventures while still drunk and whined about boys). Now I blog as a way to update my friends and family about my married life with Will. Another reason I blog is to keep Will's family updated because he's terrible at keeping in touch with them so I try my best to post pictures of him and what he's up to. I also use my blog as a way to connect with other people since I'm now officially a housewife and need something to keep me sane while at home all day. Oh, I also blog because my degree in English with a concentration in writing and my senior capstone project was in creative nonfiction. I can't help but write.

3. How would you describe your blog? My blog is a mishmash of adventures in the kitchen, dealing with being a military spouse, living abroad, travel, and my life in general. I'm sarcastic and silly which is sometimes hard to convey in blog writing, but I try.

Me and the Mister
4. What do you do when you're not blogging? Find things to do that's blog-worthy. No joke, I try to find things for us to do that will make my blog fun to read. I try to bake or cook something new to share or I try to find somewhere new to visit. I also occasionally do those boring household chores no one wants to hear about and that I absolutely hate doing. Laundry, dishes, sweeping, dusting, de-cluttering. I'm terrible at chores so please don't think my house is always company ready. It's embarrassing. You'd think that since I don't work, I'd be on top of that stuff. Sorry. Nope.

5. Describe your ideal (blog) reader. Real people. I don't want "fake" followers or readers. I want people to interact with and get to know. People like Morgan!

6. What are your favorite types of blogs to read? I love reading all different types of blogs. I especially have a soft spot for military, travel, and lifestyle blogs. As long as it's a blog of sustenance, not all advertising and contest fluff. I could care less if you're hosting a giveaway. Tell me about what you did today instead.

7. What is your favorite post (of your own)? Why? I like my travel posts the best. They're like my badges of pride because I've always wanted to travel the world and I never would have guessed I'd get the chance to do all the things I've done.

8. Have you ever thought about blogging about a different topic?  I tried writing a book blog, but it's hard because I go through spurts of reading binges. So during my off times, the blog goes by the wayside. I try to get guest bloggers to fill in the gaps, but it's hard to harass people into writing about reading.

9. Anything else you want to tell my readers, about yourself, your blog, or about the world? Ech & Will is in a transition phase, so I apologize for the stall in new posts. If you haven't followed along from the beginning, this is the perfect time to take a peak into our past.

*               *               *

Thank you so much for making Ech feel welcome here at Ms. Morgan's Reality Check. I hope to be less busy and frazzled soon and promise-promise-promise pictures from NJ and NYC (my trip to visit Mr.NewJersey starts Friday!!)

52 Days and Counting

Do you know what MEGA event happens in only 52 days???!!!

HALLOWEEN!!!!!

That's right my frightful boys and ghouls Samhain is here when the veil between this world and the next is thinnest, a pumpkin is no longer just a pumpkin but a jack'o'lantern, and it's time to pull out those tarot cards and peer into your future.

We are only 52 days away from Halloween.

Halloween, when it is hard to tell if the zombie apocalypse has begun or the Henderson family next door is just having a few friends over for dinner....mmmm brains....

The sun is hitting the earth at a different angle, the trees are beginning to change from green to gold and this blogger starts dancing around the cemetery ready to celebrate her favorite month holiday.

This October, one special addition will be that Ms. Morgan's Reality Check will be joining The Thriftiness Miss and others for a 31 Day Haunted Halloween Link Party and Hop!

But don't be frightened my pets. There will be oh-so-much-more to this October: from a pre-Halloween Spooky Spirit Week to weekly themed posts and if you're extra terrifying perhaps a schooling in where our favorite All Hallows Eve traditions have come from.

So grab those cat tails, bat wings and witches brooms and link up for a month (and more) of Halloween fun!

And the Winner is....

Congratulations to Gwen from A Little Unhinged...

...the winner of the Searchlight's Boutique Corrina Bracelet!!

Didn't win this time? Don't worry. I have a few other giveaways lined up for the next few months.

Next months giveaway will be cohosted by CustomCrochet by Lalael

Makeup Inspiration

Friday on Facebook Plus Size Pinups, Rockabilly and Vintage Gals had a beautiful picture of Lisa Marie Presley done up like Marilyn along with the following questions. I thought these would make a fun blog entry...so here we go

1. How would you describe your makeup style? Classic. Not modeled too heavily after one particular "style" or era but still classic and stylish.

2. Lipstick or lipgloss? Mascara or fake lashes?  Lipstick; but just recently. I used to be a Chapstick but have found a dark red I love so have started wearing it.  Mascara; I own fake lashes but can't get the gumption up to wear them.

3. What beauty product do you have way too many of? Eyeshadows.

4. What is your biggest beauty challenge when doing your makeup? Finding a good eyeliner. I prefer liquid but the last few I've bought were either too sparkly, caused an allergic reaction, flaked after a few hours or not waterproof.... If anyone has suggestions let me know.

5. What's your all time favorite product and why? Oh my... I don't know if I've come across a product I would call my "favorite" - nothing I've bought am I not willing to try something else. The closes is mascara products by Maybelline and facepowders by CoverGirl.

What are your answers to these questions?

Weekend Plans

I have four days (only two of those being work days) until a three day run of New Student Orientation - an event I plan, organize, execute and thusly die from stress and aneurisms. However, before I dive into the hellfire that is Orientation I get to spend this Saturday with my (soon-to-be) four year-old niece at the Oregon Zoo'

I haven't been in probably six-months to a year. And Fayth has never been (nor has her mum, dad, grandmas who are all coming with). They took her to the San Diego Zoo (my personal favorite) when she was about 18-months old; she doesn't remember it. This will be a memory making trip for her.

And I can't wait!!

My FAVORITE exhibit (whether at the Oregon Zoo or elsewhere) are the Great Apes. I can sit by their side for hours just watching their beautiful and majestic selves.

My second was the American Wolves. However the Oregon Zoo has sent theirs to a nature preserve (and no, that's not like Sparky going to live on a "farm") while the zoo expands and rearranges exhibits for the elephants and others. At least I have these gorgeous pictures to remember them by.

Girls Brunch (Pictures)

This last Saturday we had a Girls Brunch with the family. It was the first weekend, at least in a very long time, that my cousin got out of the house for a weekend of fun sans the 4-year old. So to make it a little something special I decided to break out my Great Grandmother's china and table cloth and host a Brunch that would make my Grandmother proud.

What brightens up a room more than a bouquet of flowers?

My Great Grandfather proposed to my Great Grandmother (over 80 years ago) with
this 12 person set of Hungarian China. It's been passed from oldest daughter to oldest daughter
and is only used for special occasions - like Thanksgiving, Christmas and this Girls Brunch.

We had Brunch be potluck. I made monkey bread (top center) and two kinds of muffin tin frittatas (top right).
My oldest sister brought fruit and my cousin made blueberry muffins (bottom right). Not seen is a champagne
black cherry and cranberry cocktail and toast.

In the end we had a delicious and lovely brunch that would make my Grandmother
so happy - to see all her girls sitting around laughing and enjoying one another's company.

The Week S.O.F.A.R

I want to let you know that this week (with the Republican National Convention) my links on Facebook are pretty politically charged - so I've separated them below into "Political" and "Not Political".

Political

Revealed: The GOP Strategy (video) - Is the GOP using racist strategies to get Mitt Romney in the White House? Watch the video to find out.

Representative Steve King: I've Never Heard of a Girl Getting Pregnant from Statutory Rape or Incest - WOW is all I have to say.... holy f***ing cow! Really?? Total tool.

Dear Mr. Akin, I Want You to Imagine - piece by Eve Ensler about Akin's atrocious statement that women's bodies do not allow for pregnancy after "legitimate rape".

Planned Parenthood Funding Quiz - If you take the quiz be prepared to be disgusted at the GOP.

The Pussy Riot Pie: What We Are Naming Our Feminist Performance Art Group - Some great puns and play on words - my favorite would be "Red Vadge of Courage" and "Cervix-a-lot" or "Clit Romney"

Not Political

Why the Plus Size Community Should NOT Operate Like a Bee Hive - As in no back biting or stabbing the queen to take over.

CustomPLUS (clothing website) - "Your Words. Your Size."
