Possible Promotion

I try and keep my personal life separate from my professional life. Very few people at work even know I blog...actually when I think about it, I may have only told one or two people....and only in the vague sense "I blog" nothing more.
I also don't normally don't talk about work here on my blog. I work for a small and well known enough college (in it's field) and with today's social media-centric world you just never know who might stumble across; and the last thing I want is to have posts about frustrations with work.
However, I am steps away from a possible promotion I had to share!
When I was hired (almost) three years ago it was for an event coordinator position; then last year (after some office restructuring) I was promoted to being the Assistant Director of Student Life. I kept many of my old duties (new student orientation, organizing and planning graduation, advising our student government, etc) as well as adding a number of new ones (academic and disability accommodations, student health insurance, cultural competency and inclusion, etc).
All year long the Human Resource department has been sending me various management trainings and seminars....I think I've gone to a dozen at least. I've been "trained" in everything from wage laws, dealing with difficult people, different personalities working together, etc.
Well yesterday, my HR Director came into my office and scheduled a meeting for us to meet next week and "discuss" everything I have (or at least supposed to have) learned from the trainings. He says there will be a "verbal quiz"....I'm still not sure if he meant that or if it was just his dry sense of humor (which is very possible).
Either way this is the next big step in going from "Assistant Director" to "Director" (which was the goal all along for my boss and I and the real purpose behind the trainings). I am lucky to have such a supportive boss (her original hope was to have me skip over "Assistant" and go right to "Director" last summer) and she's planning on coming with me to the meeting with HR next week. She says so she can have a conversation afterwards with HR but I think it's mostly so she can be there to support me through whatever last hoops HR is going to make me jump.
My "interview" (for lack of a better word) is on Tuesday. My plan on Monday is to go over all the hand outs and notes I took from the last year of training and find some calm-zen-like centering so I don't freeze up when asked questions.
For now if you could send me good thoughts and juju my way.
Here's hoping for a(nother) possible promotion!

New Outfit: Help Me Pick!

Let's be honest. Most days I LOVE online shopping!

Paid all my bills?
Jump onto Amazon and buy that DVD I've been putting off for a few weeks.

Have a slow day at the office?
Hop on over to eShakti and spend that $50 gift card I just got... doesn't hurt they have a 30-40% off sale right now!

But, it's days like today where I need a BFF to help me pick between this dress or that skirt.....

That's where you come in. I want to only buy ONE (okay maybe two) but I don't know which to buy. So I need your help. Which do you love?

So what do you think? Any contenders?

Fishtail Braid

I love when I find out something I've wanted to do/learn/try for a while is no where near as hard as I thought.

Case in point?
The Fishtail Braid.

Da'Sterling Bombs

First I want to say welcome to the dozens of new GFC, Facebook, Twitter, Bloglovin', Pinterest and Google+ followers. I love participating in link ups and blog hops and I've connected with many new fabulous folks thanks to this weekend's Let's Get Social Sunday link up.
Now down to these little chocolate delights.
A few months ago I won a copy of The Mighty Gastropolis Portland: A Journey Through the Center of America's New Food Revolution after a Facebook contest held by the Forktown Food Tours. The book is full of small interviews and stories with Portland chefs, as well as some of their favorite and yummy recipes. This weekend I finally picked one to make:
Da'Sterling Bombs from The Two Tarts Bakery.

Stampin Up

blank card - embossed, stamps and 3D
A few months ago my girls and I are went to the Portland Women's Expo; that's where my sister K met the Passion Party gals and became a consultant as well as my cousin "Grace" met Jodeen and found out about Stampin' Up!

"At Stampin Up!, our wide assortment of rubber stamp images, stamping techniques, and designs have been helping crafters (re)discover and express their creativity and share this creativity with others." (-from their website)

Stampin' Up is a scrapbooker and crafters crack!
"Grace" chatted up Jodeen about her own mural business (Storybook Design). Jodeen offered "Grace" a free class for herself and a few friends. So this past Saturday we headed to "Grace"s house in Washington for Stamp Party.

Sunny Summer Swap

Even though June is my busiest time of year - organizing and structuring a graduation ceremony with 20 staff workers, 75 faculty and board platform members, 100 graduating students and upwards of 1,400 friends and family member audience members - I still signed up for the June Sunny Summer Swap.

Obviously I have been going about the world only at 1/2 capacity (okay maybe less) because it wasn't until I was getting ready to write this blog did I notice my Swap Partner was ONE OF THE SWAP HOSTS!

Sarah, over at Fantastical Sharing of Recipes, didn't know what she was getting herself into when getting me as a partner! Haha. But I managed to get my head out of my ass into the game and put together a goodie box for her.

My box from her arrived yesterday, or I should say I got it out of the mailbox yesterday....I don't know how long it could have actually been sitting there....

Homeward Bound

(Part 2 of Memorial Day Weekend Recap. Read Part 1 here)

After a wonderful (but speedy) trip out to Pendleton, OR over Memorial Day weekend we wanted to take our time coming home. We didn't have a deadline (unlike making it to the Cultural Center before it closed the day before) and were able to take our time. So the evening before we packed up the car and headed home we spent the evening locating, plotting and mapping out our route home.

Umtilla County Historical Society Museum (which we didn't notice was closed on Sundays: FAIL)
As many pioneer cemeteries as possible
The Fort Dalles Museum

Okay so two of the three happened. Not too bad.

Bad Day for Betty Crocker

I'm sure I can't be the only baker/cook out there who has their "Oops" moments.

I mean even Betty Crocker had to have her bad days right?
Days when her cookies burned or pie crust was soggy?

Last night I was making Peanut Butter Cup centered cupcakes for a party I'm going to this weekend. And boy did I make a blunder of my first batch!

17 Days and Counting

We are about 17 business days from our school's graduation (of which I am primarily responsible for the execution of). So things are a tad* busy for me.

I have a few half written blog posts sitting in drafts. Every time I try to open one and finish it something happens and I have to close it again.

I promise I'll be back soon.

Cross your fingers and wish on the north star I don't lose my marbles before then.

Rockin' the Red Dress

My red dress
Thanks to my dear friend Julia, I reconnected with The Bloggess' Traveling Red Dress. It made me realize how much I have changed as a person over this last year and how a year ago I never would have imagined being someone to own or wear a red dress.

But I do now... I bought one just the other day and I had have one for my birthday in February.

Then earlier this week Julia posted a picture of her new red dress and the comment,  "Found this at Goodwill. Kept almost talking myself out of it but the Bloggess kept popping into my head to argue with me so I gave in. :-) Every girl needs a ridiculous red dress at least once in her life!"

Julia - my muse
For those unfamiliar with Julia's reference make sure to pop over and read The Bloggess' piece about her traveling red dress. The part that I'm sure rings true for so many of us:

"...the more I thought about it the more I realized how often we deny ourselves that red dress and all the other capricious, ridiculous, overindulgent and silly things that we desperately want but never let ourselves have because they are simply “not sensible”. Things like flying lessons, and ballet shoes, and breaking into spontaneous song, and building a train set, and crawling onto the roof just to see the stars better.  Things like cartwheels and learning how to box and painting encouraging words on your body to remind yourself that you’re worth it. And I am worth it."
